In 2009, Turkmenistan plans to increase oil refinery by 1.4 percent to 7.3 million tons a year compared to 7.2 million in 2008, an official Turkmen source reported. Capacity of oil refinery plants in Turkmenbashi and Seydi is used for these purposes.
Turkmenneft state concern is a key oil producer. Over 1,000 perspective gas and oil units have been discovered in the country and over 150 fields have been opened in the Western and Eastern Turkmenistan, of which only 1/3 have been developed.
Early June, Turkmendenizderyayollari (Turkmen marine fleet) state enterprise inked a contract with the Russian Krasnoe Sormovo Plant Open Joint Stock Company (OJSC) to build and purchase two ships of river-sea type with 7,000 tons of capacity to transport oil and oil products, each worth $15.5 million.
