Iraq is open to allowing a pipeline transporting gas from Iran to Syria to run through its territory, a press release from the Iraqi oil ministry said Thursday, dpa reported

"Iraq does not mind facilitating the extension of the Iranian gas pipeline through its territory to Syria and the Mediterranean Sea," Iraqi oil minister Hussein al-Sharistani said in the statement.

A delegation from the Iranian Oil Ministry had previously visited Baghdad for talks with their Iraqi counterparts about not only the pipeline, but also oil fields located along the Iraq-Iran border.

Iranian Deputy Oil Minister Jawad Ouji stressed the importance of the bilateral committee that has been tasked with discussing the status of the border oil fields.

There have been tensions between the two countries over the issue in the past, with Iranian troops spotted on oil fields within Iraqi territory earlier this year.
