Azerbaijan will become an alternative supplier of energy from the region to Europe due to increased gas consumption, Energy Programme adviser at IFRI William Ramsay told journalists in Baku on Wednesday.

He said the EU is interested in the Caspian Sea energy resources, whilst Azerbaijan, in turn, plays a great role in ensuring Europe's energy security.

"Gas fields recently discovered in Azerbaijan are the reason for Europe's keen interest. The country has great gas reserves and along with it, Europe has increased its need for gas," Ramsay said.

He said a significant growth in gas consumption is forecast particularly after the decision on not using nuclear energy was taken and therefore Azerbaijan will be an alternative energy supplier to Europe namely from the region.

According to Mr Ramsay, the crisis will affect gas consumption in Europe, as well as the implementation and investments in infrastructure projects. "It may slightly slow down the work on infrastructure projects, but will not stop them," he said.
