Geological reserves of Turkmenistan's hydrocarbon resources, as of Oct.1, 2011, are estimated at 71.21 billion tons of standard hydrocarbon fuel, Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Baymurad Hojamuhammadov said at an international conference "Oil and Gas Industry Development for 20 years of independence and international cooperation prospects" on Wednesday.

Most of the geological resources are on the land - more than 53 billion tons, about 18.2 billion tons are in offshore zone.

These figures are considerably higher than previous data. Turkmen geologists equated the geological reserves, as of 2006, to 45.44 billion tons.

Indicator was adjusted due to discovery of a major gas field in the east of the country - Southern Yoloten in recent years, which is the second largest field in the world.
Proven natural gas reserves in the country, as of Oct. 1, 2011, are estimated at 25.213 trillion cubic meters, Hojamuhammadov said.

He said most -over 70 percent is concentrated on the Mary region - in a chain of fields, including the Southern Yoloten - Osman and Yashlar with proven reserves at 19.050 trillion cubic meters. The remaining reserves are concentrated on other fields in the country.
