Kazakhstan plans to increase uranium production to 20,000 tons in 2011, Kazakh National Atomic Company Kazatomprom told Trend by phone on Friday.

Kazakhstan plans to increase uranium production to 20,000 tons in 2011, Kazakh National Atomic Company Kazatomprom told Trend by phone on Friday.

Kazakhstan produced 17,803 tons of uranium in 2010.

"Thus, Kazakhstan will remain the top world uranium producer," the company said.

Kazakhstan holds the position of top uranium producer since 2009, leaving behind Canada and Australia. The country accounts for 33 percent of world uranium production.

Meanwhile, Kazakh Kazatomprom increased uranium production to 7,978 tons in January-September, 2011 compared to 7,064 in the same period of 2010.

"Hence, Kazatomprom reserves position of world top uranium producer," the company said.

Kazatomprom company exceeded results of greatest world uranium producers French Areva and Canadian Cameco in 2010.

"Increased production is regulated by existing contracts," the company said.
Kazatomprom is Kazakh national operator for import and export of uranium, rare metals, nuclear fuel for power plants, special equipment and dual-purpose materials. A total of 100 percent of the Company's stock is held by the Government under the National Welfare Fund Samruk-Kazyna. The company employs over 25,000 people. Kazatomprom is one of the world's leading uranium mining companies.
