Kazakhstan, Astana, March 6 / Trend D. Mukhtarov /

Kazakhstan will adopt a programme related to the search for unconventional gas, Vice Minister of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurlan Sauranbayev told Trend.

"As part of the state support towards the country'svgeological industry, it is planned to adopt a programme on exploration and production of unconventional gas such as shale gas," Sauranbayev said during an expanded meeting of the working group to develop proposals on amendments to the law 'On Subsoil and Subsoil Use'.

According to him, huge reserves of unconventional gas have been discovered in the coal fields of central Kazakhstan.

"Today there is a question of economic feasibility of the development and production of gas from coal deposits. If the calculations show its profitability, it could change the whole economy of Central Kazakhstan. This would mean the issue of gasification of Astana could be solved through the use of unconventional gas," he said.

In addition according to Sauranbaev, the government has instructed the Kazgeologiya company to study the possibility of raw material supply to mono-cities.

"All these steps will be taken within the framework of state support to the geology sector," the vice minister concluded.
