Minister: Turkey’s electricity industry needs investment

It is necessary to increase investments in Turkey’s electricity industry by the end of 2013 for its further growth and resolving problems.

It is necessary to increase investments in Turkey's electricity industry by the end of 2013 for its further growth and resolving problems, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz, said, the Hurriyet newspaper reported on Thursday.

According to him, around 240 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity were generated in Turkey last year, whilst about 5.83 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity were imported to the country.
The minister also said that Turkey exported some 2.95 billion kilowatt/hours of electricity in 2012.

Yildiz stressed that in order to develop the electricity industry in large cities such as Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, it is necessary to construct power transmission lines over a distance of 23,000 kilometres.
