Turkmenistan forecasts existence of more large gas reserves at Galkynysh field

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Nov. 20

By Huseyn Hasanov - Trend:

The ongoing exploration works at Turkmenistan's largest oil field - Galkynysh indicate the presence of more large gas reserves there, Turkmen Minister of Oil and Gas Industry and Mineral Resources, Muhametnur Halylov said on Nov. 21 in Ashgabat.

The minister made the remarks at the Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan conference, held on Nov. 19-21 in Ashgabat.

"The presence of a huge gas potential is indicated by the reserves of the only super-giant gas field - Galkynysh, which ranks second in the world. The results of ongoing geological exploration works here indicate an increase in gas-bearing area and the possibility of having more large gas reserves," the minister said.

Halylov added that the total proven reserves and potential hydrocarbon resources of Turkmenistan have increased significantly thanks to the discovery of the Galkynysh gas field. About 70 per cent of the country's estimated total potential hydrocarbon resources account for the gas.

Turkmenistan's largest deposits are concentrated in the Mary oblast (province) in the east of the country. The total resources of Galkynysh with the nearby fields were estimated by local geologists and British GCA company within 26.2 trillion cubic meters.
