Azerbaijani expert talks alternative energy sources replacing traditional ones

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 27

By Anastasia Savchenko – Trend:

Gas, and to a lesser extent oil and oil products, will remain on the global balance of energy consumption for many more years, director of Eurasia Analytics consulting company Gulmira Rzayeva told Trend.

Rzayeva was commenting on the issue of the prospect of the complete replacement of traditional energy sources with renewable ones.

"Natural gas competes with coal in price and often loses,” the expert said. “However, as a result of introduction of a tax on carbon dioxide emissions, many European countries switched from coal to gas in electricity generation not only because of economic feasibility but also decarbonization."

Rzayeva emphasized that the same situation may happen with competition of gas with renewable energy sources.

"According to the International Energy Agency, gas demand in Europe will fall from 2030," the expert said.

“As for the complete replacement of traditional energy sources, certain regions should be taken into account,” Rzayeva said. “Full replacement seems controversial in the global market, while Europe is more progressive in such issues as decarbonization and environmental protection.”

"All forecasts for the decarbonization of the energy sector in Europe are long-term - until 2040-2050,” the expert said. “But we can see the result of the decarbonization process much earlier than we expect, judging by the current pace of its development."

“The global transition to the full use of renewable energy in all sectors - electricity generation, heat supply, transport until 2050, will depend on the potential and technology of using renewable energy sources, including storage, the ability to generate uninterrupted energy,” Rzayeva said.

Eco friendly and economical alternative energy sources are renewable resources. They are intended to replace traditional energy sources operating on oil, natural gas and coal, which, while burning, emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which contributes to the growth of the greenhouse effect and global warming.
