Production potential of Iran's thermal power plants revealed

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 15

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The power generation potential of Iran's thermal power plants has increased to 67,735 megawatts, said Hamidreza Azimi, deputy director of Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) Holding Company, Trend reports citing Ministry of Energy of Iran.

Azimi noted that this was possible following the commissioning of the first steam unit of the thermal power plant in Urmia county in Iran's West Azerbaijan Province.

The deputy director added that so far, 557 units on thermal power plants have been built in Iran.

"Currently, there are 377 thermal power plants owned by the private sector and large industry, and their potential to generate electricity is 45,732 megawatts. This shows that 67.5 percent of the production capacity of thermal power plants is supplied by the private sector," he said.

Azimi stressed that at present, the total production of power plants in Iran, including thermal, water, alternative, small-scale and nuclear power plants is 83,685 megawatts, and 81 percent of the volume is produced by TPPs.

The deputy director added that currently, the combined cycle power plants account for 41.7 percent of the production potential of Iran's thermal power plants with 28,249 megawatts, the gas units account for 34.9 percent with 23,657 megawatts, and steam units account for 23.4 percent with 15,829 megawatts.
