Number and value of exchanged checks in Iran declines

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 13

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

About 5.4 million checks worth about 2 quadrillion rials (about $47.7 billion) were exchanged in Iran in the 7th month of the current Iranian year (September 23 through October 22, 2021), Trend reports citing the Central Bank of Iran (CBI).

According to the statistics, the exchanged checks decreased by 19.8 percent in value and by 25.7 percent in number, compared to the 6th month of the current Iranian year (August 23 through September 22, 2021).

"The checks exchanged in the 7th month were mainly registered in Iran’s Tehran Province (28.5 percent in number, 50.1 percent in value), Isfahan Province (10.7 percent in number, 7 percent in terms of value), Razavi Khorasan Province (8 percent in number, 5.3 percent in value)," the statistics said.

According to the statistics, 4.9 million checks worth 1.74 quadrillion rials (about $41.5 billion) were received in Iran in the 7th month. This is a decrease of 20.2 percent in value and 24.9 percent in number, compared to the 6th month.

The CBI noted that about 476,000 checks worth 262 trillion rials (about $6.23 billion) were returned in the 6th month.

The returned checks decreased by 16.6 percent value, and 32.9 percent in number compared to the 6th month.

The reason for the return of checks is the lack of available funds or a deficit. Thus, 458,000 checks worth 252 trillion rials (about $6 billion) were returned in Iran for these reasons in the 7th month.

"The checks 96.1 percent in value and 96.4 in number were returned due to lack of available funds or deficit," the statistics said.
