Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 19 /. Trend, H. Valiyev /

Work on the construction of the Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) has been accelerated, Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov said on Tuesday.

According to him, one of the important components in the implementation of this project is the laying of the Trans-Caspian segment of the cable line.

An agreement on this issue is expected to be reached in the near future, he said. Today, Azerbaijan is discussing the possibility of laying an underwater segment with Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

It is assumed that the commissioning of TASIM will happen in the middle of the year. The main issue facing today's agenda is joint Azeri-Kazakh construction of an optic cable line under the Caspian Sea.

Overall, it is planned to build two main lines within the project, one of which will pass through the territory of Ukraine, the second - through the territory of Turkey. Both lines will be independent and interchangeable. The operators of these countries will act as the link with major European operators.

The TASIM project is intended to connect a total of 20 countries. Its implementation will eliminate the "information gap" between Western Europe and the Pacific Rim.
