Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug. 21

By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

The delivery of isotopes to Azerbaijan for commissioning of the sterilization plant has been delayed until the end of the year, the Institute of Radiation Problems of Azerbaijan told Trend.

This is due to the fact that the shipping container, which should deliver them to Azerbaijan, is still in Cuba, the source told Trend.

"After the isotopes are delivered to Azerbaijan, they will be used to launch a sterilization plant," the Institute stated.

A part of the isotopes will be delivered to Azerbaijan from Hungary, and another part - from Russia, according to the approved road map. After delivery of the isotopes to the country, it will take approximately three weeks to load them into the plant, after which the plant will be put into operation.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has acquainted with the project of construction of the sterilization plant, and the Agency is ready to provide necessary support in implementation of other projects.

The sterilization plant, laboratory and all necessary infrastructure are fully ready for operation. The plant is in the Gobu settlement (20 kilometers from Baku) on the site being on the balance of the "Center for Nuclear Researches" CJSC.

The sterilization plant allows to apply the method of gamma irradiation for the destruction of microbes, which, in turn, increases the shelf life of agricultural products (grain, meat products, dried fruits, potatoes, etc.).
