The State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads is currently working on a project that envisages construction of a new tunnel, the agency's spokesperson Anar Najafli told Trend.
Anar Najafli noted that a draft of the new tunnel, which will be built next to the Baku International Bus Terminal, has been submitted to the government for consideration.
"The purpose of this project, which has been submitted to the government, is to eliminate heavy traffic congestion, as well as to avoid traffic jams in the area of the 20th January roundabout. Residents of the capital are in dire need of this tunnel, since long hours of traffic congestion are observed in the morning and evening rush hours," the spokesperson said.
Currently, repairs are being carried out in the area of the bus terminal, starting from the tunnel of Moscow Avenue to the Masazir roundabout. This work is associated with the expansion of the specified section by one lane on each side. Funds were allocated from the budget which is annually determined for the maintenance and improvement of the roads of Azerbaijan.
This year funds have been allocated for the improvement of 36 highways of republican importance, for the repair of 12 roads in Baku, as well as for the improvement of the districts of the capital and surrounding villages.
