Kazakhstan, Astana, April 10 /Trend D.Mukhtarov/

Former director general of the Kazakh firm ALUA Terminal, Renat Karasartov wanted for committing a crime under Art. 209 Part 3 Section B (economic smuggling committed by an organised group) of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan, has been extradited from Bucharest to Almaty at the request of the general prosecutor's office, the department's press service said.

Karasartov, (33) is accused that when he was director general of ALUA Terminal, he did, in 2005, as part of a criminal group made up of Korgas customs officers and workers of his company, did frequently organise large quantities of contraband through the customs border of Kazakhstan by not declaring them, or the declarations were unreliable.

A positive decision on extradition by Romania was taken on the principle of reciprocity and despite the absence of the relevant international treaties in the field of legal assistance in criminal matters between the two countries.

Earlier on the same principles were the matter of hiding Kazakhstan citizens extradited from Spain, Portugal and Sweden. These facts can be regarded as evidence of the expansion of Kazakh-European legal cooperation, increasing confidence in the legal system of Kazakhstan in ensuring safeguards for the protection of rights and freedom. Currently, the case is under investigation.
