Turkmenistan must continue modernizing the national legislation on the basis of the international practice, thorough study of international experience and international legal acts, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.

Turkmenistan must continue modernizing the national legislation on the basis of the international practice, thorough study of international experience and international legal acts, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said.

President Berdimuhamedov also paid attention at the challenges of the further democratic reforms, the the Turkmen government said.

Speaker Akja Nurberdieva informed the President about the ongoing parliamentary work to further improve national legislation to successfully implement programs of national development, strengthening the unity and stability of the Turkmen society and its democratic foundations.

Current MPs were elected in December 2008.

The term of MPs' term of office is five years.

According to the country's Constitution, a Turkmen president can be a citizen born in Turkmenistan. The candidate must be at least forty years old, though not older than seventy, know the state language, have lived in Turkmenistan during the past fifteen years, worked in state bodies, public associations, enterprises, institutions and organizations.
