Uzbekistan eyes increasing GDP per capita

The government of Uzbekistan plans to increase GDP per capita from the current $1,700 to $2,500 by 2025, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.

On May 27, at the international forum “Transformation and privatization of state-owned enterprises: a new stage of economic reforms” Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Jamshid Kuchkarov said that the privatization of state assets and the transformation of state-owned enterprises will be one of the conditions for increasing economic growth and GDP per capita in Uzbekistan.

“We are faced with big tasks to increase economic growth and GDP per capita growth. And we see the privatization of state assets and the transformation of state-owned enterprises as one of the conditions, drivers for implementation of the tasks we face,” he said.

It was noted that the government has set a goal to increase GDP per capita from the current $1,700 to $2,500 by 2025 and to $4,200 by 2030 and this will require high and sustained growth rates of 6-7 percent per year.

Kuchkarov noted that President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev set a goal to achieve GDP growth in 2021 at the level of six percent.

The deputy PM also noted that the head of state signed a decree on measures to accelerate the reform of enterprises with the participation of the state and the privatization of state assets and a decree on measures to further accelerate the privatization of state assets.

GDP per capita is determined by dividing its total volume in current prices by the average population of the country for a certain period of time. The average resident population of Uzbekistan in 2018 amounted to - 32.9 million people, in 2019 - 33.5 million people, in 2020 - 34.2 million people.

According to the State Statistics Committee, in 2020, GDP per capita in real terms decreased by 0.3 percent against growth by 3.8 percent in 2019 and by 3.6 percent in 2018.
