Tehran supports ceasefire, negotiations for Syria free election: Ahmadinejad

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Tehran supports ceasefire and negotiations in order to hold free elections as ways for ending the crisis in Syria, Presstv reported.

"In our view, ceasefire and dialogue for free elections is the right solution," Ahmadinejad said during a press conference on the sidelines of the first summit of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) group in Kuwait City on Wednesday.

Referring to his meeting with the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in Baku on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said peace and Syria's situation was the major part of our talks in this meeting adding, "We seek to establish peace, stability, security, people's basic rights, freedom, justice, respect and the right to choose".

"All nations must have these rights and there is no exception," he added.

The president also noted that all governments must help so that the Syrian crisis could be resolved at the negotiation table.

On Tuesday, UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi called on Iran to help achieve a ceasefire in Syria during the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) starting on October 25.

During his visit to Tehran, Brahimi held talks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili.
