Iran tea output up, imports down

Iran’s domestic tea production has registered a rise by 73 percent in the past three years, Mohammad Vali Rouzbehan, the head of Tea Organization of Iran, said.

The country’s fresh tea leaf output reached 139,000 tons in the fiscal year to March 2017, compared to 80,000 tons of production during the one-year period to March 2014, Rouzbehan said, IRNA news agency reported June 12.

The organization purchased 139,000 tons of tea (fresh leaf), worth $73 million from the farmers in last fiscal year (ended March 20, 2017) indicating a rise by 60 percent in terms of volume and 73 percent in terms of value compared to the preceding year, he said.

From the purchased fresh leaves 31,200 tons of dried tea was produced last fiscal year.

Iranian tea consumption also increased by 63 percent in the 3-year period from 19,000 tons to 31,000 tons, the official said.

On the other hand, the country’s tea import has registered a decline by 11 percent year-on-year, he said, adding that imports meet 72 percent of Iran’s total tea consumption.

Iran’s annual tea consumption stands at 110,000 tons, Rouzbehan said.

Over 21,500 hectares of farms are under tea cultivation in Iran.
