Iran adds renewables to power grid

Iran added initial renewable power resources during the current fiscal year to its power grid, indicated by the weekly statistics of the Energy Ministry, published on Aug. 8.

Iran’s fiscal year started on March 21, 2017.

According to the report, Iran added 27 megawatts (MW) of renewables to power generation capacity during a week of July 28.

The report put the current renewables capacity in Iran at 291 MW.

Iran plans to add more 663 MW to renewables capacity by the end of current fiscal year.

Abdolhamid Afsari, Deputy Director General for Planning and Coordination of the Ministerial Office at the Ministry of Energy told Trend, Aug 8 that, the future Minister of Energy of Iran should take serious steps toward diversifying country’s energy resources from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

President Hassan Rouhani on Aug 8 proposed his second-term ministers to the Parliament. Habibollah Bitaraf was nominated for the post of the Energy Minister.

Iran is projecting to produce 5 GW of renewable power resources by 2021 and 7.5 GW by 2030.

Reported statistics indicated that Iran has generated 118.309 TWh of electricity during March 21-July 28. The volume was less than 110 TWh during the same period of last year.

Iran’s nominal power generation capacity stood at 77.104 GW as of July 28.

Country has consumed 26.938 billion cubic meters of gas (+9.4% Y/Y) as well as 572 million liters of diesel (+6.3% Y/Y) and 577 million liters of fuel oil (-32% Y/Y) during the during March 21-July 28.
