Caviar production volume increases in Iran’s Astara

This Iranian year (started on March 21, 2018), the production of sturgeon in Astara region of Iran’s Gilan province will increase to 140 tons, while the production of caviar - up to one ton, Sadeq Hassipour, director of the Fishing Organization of the Astara region of Gilan Province said in an interview with ISNA.

He said that sturgeon is valuable because of its meat and caviar.

Technologies have been developed to breed fish making caviar at the domestic level, Hassipour added.

Currently, 3 sturgeon breeding facilities have been established in the region, he said.

Last Iranian year, 88 tons of fish and 111 kg of caviar were obtained from 2 fish-breeding facilities, Hassipour said.

This Iranian year 550 kilograms of caviar have been produced in the region, he said.

Hassipour added that by the end of the year up to 1 ton of caviar is expected to be produced.

The fish is packed and sold to local and foreign markets, he said.

White fish is 1.5-4 meters in length. Moreover, 980 kilograms of white fish and 120 kg of caviar caught on the Iranian coast of the Caspian Sea were considered a record.
