Iran bans import of wheat by private sector

TEHRAN, Iran, Nov. 23

The CEO of the Government Trading Corporation of Iran said the import of wheat by the private sector is still banned.

Referring to the recent rumors about the issuance of a license to import wheat by private companies, the CEO of Government Trading Corporation of Iran, Yazdan Seif said that "Since 2016, the import of wheat by the private sector has been prohibited, Trend reports citing ISNA.

“During the last years, in order to complete strategic reserves and increase the country's food security, the import of wheat has been done only by the public sector and no private sector has imported wheat,” Seif said.

Iran's total imports of grains in 2019-20 are forecast at 13.3 million tonnes, up from 12.5 million the previous year. Wheat imports are expected to be just 300,000 tonnes, up from 200,000 the year before, Iran Media reported.
