Iranian airlines currently have no flights to Saudi Arabia and for flying to other countries they do not see any need to use Saudi Arabia's airspace, an Iranian aviation official said.

Ebrahim Moradi said that Iranian airlines have no regular flights to Africa, therefore they do not need to use Saudi airspace, IRNA news agency added.

He further added that Iran Air and Mahan airlines stopped their flights to Saudi Arabia following the escalation of ties between Tehran and Riyadh in January.

The remarks came following a recent decision by Saudi Arabia banning Iran's Mahan airline from entering its air space.

The crisis between Riyadh and Tehran erupted after execution of a prominent Shia cleric, Nimr al-Nimr by the Saudis on Jan. 2.

Following the execution, angry Iranian protesters stormed Saudi embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad. Right after the attacks on its diplomatic missions, the Saudi Arabia said it severed ties with the Islamic Republic.
