Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (January 2014)

The foreign trade turnover with 101 world countries amounted to 2.41 billion in January 2014, or 5.66 percent less than in January 2013. The volume of exports decreased by 2.7 percent and amounted to $1.87 billion. The volume of import decreased by 14.73 percent and amounted to $535.13 million. Azerbaijan exported 565 products, and imported 3,027 different goods. As of January 2014, the nominal index of export exceeded import. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $1.34 billion.

As in previous periods, oil, gas and oil products were mainly exported from Azerbaijan in January 2014.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports as of January 2014 (86.49 percent) fell to the export of crude oil. The exports of crude oil decreased by 0.72 percent compared to January 2013. The export of oil products decreased by 18.19 percent during this period. Around 3.76 percent of total exports from the country fell to the oil products in January 2014.

Some 2,214,900 tons of oil were transported via the Heydar Aliyev Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, 377,500 tons - the Baku-Supsa pipeline, 84,800 tons - via the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline and 85,400 tons were shipped by rail to Baku-Batumi in January.

As of January 2014, gas exports from Azerbaijan accounted for 3.28 percent of the total volume of export compared to 2.93 percent in 2013. In January gas exports from Azerbaijan (control device data) hit ​​930.9 million cubic meters compared to 870.2 million cubic meters in December and 736.1 million cubic meters in January 2013.

Around 289.8 million cubic meters of gas worth of $61,432,200 were formalized upon the cargo customs declarations compared to 319.5 million cubic meters of gas worth of 909.5 million in January 2013. The export price for 2014 is $211.98 for the time being compared to $229.03 per a thousand cubic meters throughout 2013.

As distinct from 2013 when a decline was observed in chemical products export in the country's foreign trade turnover, Azerbaijan exported some $4.9 million worth of chemical products in January 2014 which is by 12.91 percent more compared to the same period of 2013 and accounts for 0.27 percent of the total export volume.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during this period Azerbaijan exported goods totaling $435.1 million to Italy which makes up 23.26 percent of a total export volume. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. France ($424.8 million) and Indonesia ($211.4 million) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Turkey ranks first on largest import volume ($96.1 million) in January 2014. About 17.97 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Russia ranks second - $79.8 million and Germany - third ($41.4 million).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 31.66 percent in the reporting period fell to the import of machinery, equipment, electrical equipment and spare parts. The machinery and equipment worth $169.42 million were imported in January 2014 or by 4.12 percent more than in January 2013.

Import of ferrous metals ranks second for the volume of import to the country. The share of this product in the total volume of import to the country amounted to 11.12 percent or 59.5 million manat in January.

Many vehicles and parts worth $47.95 million (the share in the total import volume - 8.96 percent) were brought in the country.

Grain import has significantly increased in January (by 81.85 percent compared to January 2013) which is related to insufficient domestic production of cereals.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in January 2014 amounted to $201.9 million or 8.39 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to the CIS countries for the period totaled $77.9 million (4.16 percent of the total export volume) by decreasing by 35.69 percent and imports - $123.97 million (23.17 percent) by decreasing by 26.36 percent. As a result, the country had a red ink in trading with them to the amount of $0.05 billion.

Around 40-87 percent, or $983.3 million of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover ($2.4 billion) fell to non-EU and non-CIS countries, while some 50.74 percent ($1.220.8 billion) fell to EU countries in January.

In January 2014 Azerbaijani exports to the EU countries amounted to $1.056.2 billion, or 56.46 percent of a total export volume ($1.9 billion) amid a 4.34 percent increase. Imports from EU ($164.53 million) dropped by 24.59 percent and amounted to 30.75 percent of a total import volume ($0.535 billion). As a result, the country had a black ink of trade balance with the EU at the level of $0.892 billion or 66.76 percent of the country's foreign trade surplus ($1.336 billion).

In January 2014, exports to non-EU and non-CIS countries decreased by 6.67 percent - up to $736.7 million or 39.38 percent of a total export volume. Imports inceased by 2.59 percent and hit $246.6 million or 46.09 percent of all imports. As a result, the country received black ink worth $0.5 billion with these countries.

During this period, about 1,788 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 1,405- legal entities and 383 - physical entities.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $1.78 billion (95.19 percent), private sector - $83.76 million (4.48 percent), the share of physical entities - $6.67 million (0.36 percent).

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $105.82 million (19.77 percent), the private sector - $413.57 million (77.28 percent), physical entities -$15.74 million (2.94 percent).
