Four people were killed in Tbilisi as a result of flooding that occurred on Sunday night due to heavy rain. The Kura River burst its banks on the right bank of Tbilisi and flooded Ortachala area, where rescuers traveled on the boats, Agency for Emergency Situations told Trend.
The first blow fell on the barracks in Gorgasali 3 street, which killed a mother and her two children. An elderly woman was also killed in the street.
Eight more people were also injured in Gorgasali street. They were hospitalized, there is no threat to their lives. According to eyewitnesses, the first wave had a height of 3 meters, and it brought the trees, slag, sand and stones.
Several houses were destroyed in the result of the flood. Rescuers evacuated the inhabitants of the few homes.
Military arrived to help the rescuers. They were clearing the streets with help of heavy equipment, as landslide took place in addition to the flood. The situation has stabilized by 3 o'clock in the morning, as the heavy rain stopped.
The rescuers had been working through the night. Their work was coordinated by the Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava.
Rescue operations are continuing, firefighters pumped water from the basements of houses.
Traffic has been restored in the city by the morning.
The homes in Orchala street has been damaged seriously. Exact amount of damage will be calculated on Sunday.
Meanwhile, weather forecasters say the wet weather will continues in Tbilisi for three days.
