OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Riccardo Migliori has expressed his concern over the arrests of opposition representatives and civil activists in Georgia on the eve of upcoming parliament elections.

"Less than a week is left before important parliamentary elections in Georgia, I am very concerned over information on arrests of activists and opposition spread by mass media and groups of social activists.

Having visited Tbilisi, I realize the importance of these elections and I hope that the situation during the rest of campaign and after it will stay calm. I call on all participants to assist the process.

"Arrests and claims, resulting by dismissal of political activists for the election period, must be taken seriously. The elections are a possibility for an extended dialogue. I call on the government to exercise due restraint, particularly during this sensitive period. Any action could be considered as inequality and become subject to a serious concern", Migliori said.

Parliament elections in Georgia will take place on October 1.

The government has recently announced that French gendarmerie passed materials on overthrow of government to Georgia. The former Georgian minister Gogi Khaindrava was questioned in this regard.
