Georgian President declares party’s update

Georgia, Tbilisi, August 2 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili proposes to hold a congress of the United National Movement in September and discuss fundamental changes.

The process of the former ruling party's return "with new energy" has started, a statement issued on Friday by the party chairman, referring to the activists and members of the United National Movement, said.

He proposed the initiative to hold elections for leadership positions in the party.

"What is now happening in Georgia is an attempt of revenge by the old corrupt elites against the "Rose Revolution". This attempt, just like all the previous ones oriented for revenge, is doomed to failure ... There is a need for actions and changes ... The process of the National Movement's return with new energy is already obvious, and we all will be able to successfully bring this process to the end," Saakashvili says.

He stressed that despite the fact that the Secretary General of the National Movement, former Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili is in custody, the party has maintained the unity and remains true to its ideals.

Alongside, he urged members to forget those members of the National Movement, who have betrayed the political ideals of this team. "We are now going through a necessary stage of critical analysis and renewal, which means that we also need to introduce changes, not forgetting about the main principles, and create a healthier, more democratic and open organization ... Therefore, I propose that the National Movement takes another step. We have to found a party which, on the one hand, will be a generator of ideas, and on the other - will turn these ideas into a subject for public discussion," Saakashvili says.

He also expressed hope that he will remain the leader of the National Movement in the future.
