Clinton says Baghdad bombings cannot derail Iraqi democracy

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday condemned a recent spate of deadly bombings in Baghdad and said the terrorists behind them could not derail the democratic process in Iraq, dpa reported.

"The terrorists who committed these crimes aim to sow fear among the Iraqi people, but they will not succeed in derailing Iraq's effort's to build a future of peace and security," Clinton said in a statement.

At least 20 people were killed and 80 injured in a fresh bombing in central Baghdad on Tuesday, one day after three car bombs killed dozens more in the city centre.

The renewed violence comes as Iraq prepares for national parliamentary elections scheduled for March 7.

The Iraqi people's "confidence in the political system and in their ability to chart their own future is a direct rebuke to those who would rule by fear, intimidation, and violence," Clinton said.
