A Palestinian smuggler was electrocuted in a tunnel beneath the Gaza-Egypt border in southern Gaza Strip, an unnamed hospital official said Monday.

The dead was identified as Ahmed Al-Astal, 22, from Khan Younis city, an official at a hospital in the border city of Rafah said, noting Al-Astal had died from the electric shock before being brought to the hositial, Xinhua reported.

The tunnel business flourished after Israel imposed a blockade on Gaza in 2007, but it is sagging as Israel eased the restrictions following its deadly raid on a Gaza-bound Turkish aid flotilla in May.

Human rights group in Gaza said more than 150 people were killed in the tunnels over the past three years, most of them by Israeli raids and natural cave-ins.
