The Libyan crisis has had a negative impact on security in Central Africa, including the proliferation of weapons that belonged to the Moamer Gaddafi regime, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in a report to the UN Security Council on Monday.

In addition, the threat posed by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in a number of Central African countries contributed to tensions. LRA troops have been denounced for their atrocities against civilians, dpa reported.

African leaders have raised major concern over Libyan weapons falling into the hands of al-Qaeda in the Maghreb in North Africa, which "could enable the terrorist group to spread its activities into the wider Central Africa sub-regions," the report said.

Tens of thousands of migrant workers from Libya have returned home without remittances, affecting the local economy and society in Central Africa.

"The recent arrival of returnees from Libya could increase the burden on host communities, and heighten the risk of potential tensions" within communities of displaced people, the report said.

The council meeting on Central Africa was convened to discuss threats in that region.
