Syria urgently needs shipments of medicines because the country's pharmaceutical plants have been damaged in the conflict, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday in Geneva, reported dpa.

"The Syrian health sector is experiencing severe shortages in medicines and pharmaceutical products," WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said, adding that sanctions and rising fuel costs have made the problem worse.

Most of the factories are located in regions where the violence has been escalating - around Aleppo, Damascus and in Homs.

Many hospitals and health centres are also no longer functioning, Jasarevic said.
