Explosion on outskirts of Sri Lanka's capital kills minister, several others

(iht) - A government spokesman says an explosion on the outskirts of Sri Lanka's capital killed several people, including a minister.

Anusha Paltipa said the blast occurred early Sunday at the start of a marathon 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Colombo.

Minister of Highways and Road Development Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, who had come to kick off the event, was among those killed.
