Pope Benedict XVI ended his historic visit to the United Nations Friday, after
addressing the UN General Assembly and meeting government dignitaries and UN
staff, who loudly applauded him.
Benedict spent more than three hours at UN headquarters, the third pope to have
visited the UN in the world body's 62-year history. He WAS accompanied
to the UN entrance by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the president of the
General Assembly, Srgjan Kerim.
Benedict was heading to 87th street in Upper Eastside
Manhattan, to Yorkville, to visit St. Joseph ParisH, which was founded in 1873
by German immigrants.
A small community of German descendants still live there.
