(RIA Novosti) - An explosive device planted under a car belonging to a top official from Daghestan's finance ministry went off early on Monday in Makhachkala, the republic's capital, a police source said.

"The explosion seriously damaged the car, but no one was injured," the source said.

A criminal case has been launched, an investigation is underway.

Terrorist attacks and assassinations remain widespread in Russia's republics of Ingushetia and Daghestan, as violence spills over from neighboring Chechnya, although the Kremlin has ended its campaign to fight separatists and terrorists there.

On Sunday Colonel Akhmedudin Absaludinov, a deputy head investigator at the republic's interior ministry, was shot dead in the center of Makhachkala by an unknown assailant, a police source said.
