Authorities in southwest China's Yunnan Province confirmed Saturday 250,000 people have been displaced by Thursday's 6.0-magnitude, instead of 400,000 filed in a previous report.
The miscalculation was due in part to the chaos in the aftermath of the quake which left one dead and more than 300 people injured, said Cao Jianfang, deputy governor of Yunnan, Xinhua reported.
Wang Shufen, chief of Yunnan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs, said the quake refugees came from Lijiang City, Chuxiong Ethnic Yi Autonomous Prefecture and Dali Ethnic Bai Autonomous Prefecture, and about 110,000 of the total were from Yao'an County, the worst-affected area in Thursday's quake. The county comes under administration of Chuxiong.
The quake occurred at 7:19 p.m. Thursday, at a depth of about 10 kilometers, with the epicenter in Guantun Township of Yao'an, about 200 km from the provincial capital of Kunming.
Strong tremors were felt in other areas of Chuxiong, Lijiang and Dali. Thursday's quake was followed by eight aftershocks measuring 3- to- 4.1 on the Richter scale, three centered in Yao'an and the other five centered in the neighboring Dayao County, also in Chuxiong.
Liang Yu, chief of Yao'an County's bureau of civil Affairs, said they have received plenty of relief materials, including 4,200 tents, 200 blankets, 4,300 cotton-padded quilts, 30 tons of rice and 1,000 buckets of edible oil.
A total of 3,018 tents were erected to accommodate 21,802 as of Friday night, said Liang, who added the rest of the displaced have sought shelter with relatives.
