UN calls on Afghans vote on forthcoming election

The United Nations Security Council has called on Afghans to exercise their vote in the forthcoming presidential election set for August 20 this year, an official of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Monday, reported Xinhua.

"The Security Council on Wednesday welcomed the Afghan electoral preparation for next month presidential and provincial council election and called on Afghan people to exercise their votes in this historic opportunity," Nilab Mobarez the spokesperson of UNAMA told a press briefing.
  
She further stressed that the Security Council wants Afghans to have a free, fair, transparent, credible, secure and inclusive polls.
  
Afghanistan's second presidential and provincial councils election in the post -Taliban country is going to be held amid tight security month later in order to enable some 17 million eligible voters to use their franchise to elect the country's president.
  
While the date for election is drawing closer, the Taliban insurgents have vowed to disrupt the electoral process by any possible means.
