Mandela mourns great grand-daughter as Zenani laid to rest

Nelson Mandela's great grand-daughter, Zenani Mandela, was laid to rest Thursday ahead of an emotional memorial service for the 13-year-old, who was killed in a car crash on the opening day of the World Cup, DPA reported.

Mandela, 91, and his wife Graca Machel joined hundreds of mourners, including his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, at the service at the teenager's school in Johannesburg, which got underway shortly after 1000 local time (0800 GMT).

An overflow tent had been set up outside the school chapel to accommodate a large crowd of mainly schoolfriends and family.

The award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir was chosen to perform hymns.

Zenani Mandela was killed when the car in which she and two other people were returning from a World Cup kick-off concert rolled on the highway south of Johannesburg in the early hours of June 11.

Her death cast a pall over the start of the tournament, causing Mandela to cancel his attendance at the opening game.

The driver of the car, who was arrested on charges of drunk driving and culpable homicide, is closely connected to the Mandela family, through his father, who is the partner of one of Mandela's daughters.

He is due to appear in court on July 26.
