A three-day wildfire that ravaged some 150 hectares of forest in Georgia's central region is now under control, authorities said Monday.
The Environment Protection Division of the Georgian Department of Natural Resources said that without big wind, the blaze in this region is expected to be contained completely within two days, Xinhua reported.
Driven by the heat wave, the wildfire was spreading quickly since it raged in Georgia's famous Borjormi Nature Reserve on July 31. The local government assigned more than 400 people to fight the fire, and the Defense Ministry also dispatched helicopters to assist the firefighters in the steep terrains.
Now the cause of the wildfire is under investigation by Georgian experts. The fire is believed to have been sparked by the recent ongoing heat wave.
Georgia suffered a rare heat wave during the past month, and the temperatures climbed to 35-40 degrees Celsius. Both directly and indirectly, the heat wave has caused a number of fires in the capital city of Tbilisi and other regions.
