The death toll in a weekend bus accident has risen to 41 with 13 injured, Ecuadoran police said Monday, dpa reported.
The bus left no brake marks when it went off a curve on a mountain highway Sunday near Laguna de Yambo, about 100 kilometres south of Quito, and plunged 20 metres into a ravine. Authorities suspect that the driver may have been asleep at the wheel.
The bus rolled over and came to rest on its roof, which was crushed.
The mishap is one of the deadliest in recent years in Ecuador, which like other Andean countries is plagued by bus accidents.
