Police killed four militants in a special operation in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a local police source said, RIA Novosti reported.

A group of militants was blocked by police forces in a house in the village of Kirovaul on late Thursday night. Militants opened fire after policemen asked them to surrender.

"According to preliminary information, four militants, including a woman, were killed. The identity of one of the militants has been already established," the source said adding that the identified militant was a member of a terrorist group.

Terrorist attacks are common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, including Dagestan and Chechnya, but most target security forces or officials. The Kremlin has vowed to clamp down on militant groups while stepping up efforts to boost the local economies.
