10 pct of Peru's COVID-19 fatalities linked to heart disease

Some 10 percent of fatalities in Peru from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) involve patients with cardiovascular disease, the coordinator of the Directorate of Non-communicable Diseases, Jorge Hancco said, Trend reports citing Xinhua.

The specialist said that heart disease is one of the main risks of dying of COVID-19, which to date has claimed 32,324 lives in Peru and infected 808,714 people.

On World Heart Day, commemorated every Sept. 29, the specialist warned that in Peru an average of three people die every hour from heart disease, despite the fact that the condition can be prevented by eating a healthy diet and physical exercise.

In the past year, 19.7 percent of Peruvians over 15 years of age presented health problems linked to high blood pressure, according to the Demographic and Family Health Survey.
