Turkey will respond in a tough way if the US refuses to provide the country with F-35 fighters, and this will negatively affect the relations between Ankara and Washington, said Hami Aksoy, the Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman, Turkish media reported May 25.
Aksoy noted that the US has no right to refuse from supplying F-35 fighters to Turkey.
Previously, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey is a strategic partner of the US, and Ankara as a partner has always fulfilled its obligations. He also said that Turkey has paid for the supply of F-35 fighters.
The agreement for the supply between the Turkish government and Lockheed Martin company was signed in May 2017.
Meanwhile, representatives of the US Democratic Party put forward the initiative to cancel the delivery of the fifth-generation F-35 fighters to Turkey because of the country’s purchase of Russian S-400 Triumph missile systems.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier said if the US halts the supply of F-35 fighter jets, Turkey will retaliate.
