The technical state of the Metsamor Atomic Power Station (APS) in Armenia is a real ecological threat for the entire South Caucasus, a political scientist Mubariz Ahmadoglu, the head of the Political Technologies and Innovations Centers told Trend. It was a comment on the 2-day visit of Muhammad Al-Baradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to Yerevan.
“It is well known, that the Metsamor APS regularly suspends the operation for technical reasons,” Ahmadoglu noted. He said that the Al-Baradei’s visit to Yerevan was related to the will of the international institutions to close the APS urgently.
According to Ahmadoglu, Al-Baradei’s 2-day visit will allow to specify the world community’s position on the problem.
“Information about the atomic energy of Armenia had been poor so far and many people did not know that except for the Metsamor APS, there were 1200 objects related to the atomic sphere in Armenia,” Ahmadoglu underlined.
“Armenia is not able to exploit the Metsamor APS despite its guarantees. There is a real threat of accidents in Armenia, which concern the whole region,” he stated.
