Sowing areas will exceed 21.5 million hectares in Kazakhstan in 2015, Kazakh Agriculture Vice-Minister of Saparhan Omarov said.

"The area sown with all crops will exceed 21.5 million hectares in 2015, which is 0.1 million hectares less compared to last year. The spring sowing is planned at the area of 18.5 million hectares," Novosti-Kazakhstan news agency quoted Omarov as saying at a briefing March 31.

Grain crops will cover an area of about 15.2 million hectares, including 12.2 million hectares sown with wheat, he said.

Vice-Minister noted that sowing of wheat will decrease by 235,000 hectares, or 2 percent, rice - by 8,500 hectares or 9 percent in 2015. Meanwhile the area sown with grain forage, legumes and cereals will increase by 104,000 hectares or 4 percent.

The sowing campaign has already started in the south of Kazakhstan, Omarov said. Over 160,000 have been sown so far.
