The North-South transportation corridor project has been discussed during the meeting of the Secretary in India’s Ministry of External Affairs Sujata Mehta with Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov in Baku.

“As a very important initiative, this project will bring great benefits to the countries of the region,” Mehta told reporters July 28 in Baku.

The North-South transportation corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe to South-East Asia. It will serve as a link connecting the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.

At the initial stage, the North-South corridor will transport 5 million tons of cargo per year with further expansion of transportation to over 10 million tons.

Mehta said that she has visited Baku to hold the next political consultations. The previous round of the talks was held in Delhi in 2013.

All aspects of the two countries’ bilateral cooperation, in particular, opportunities to improve the economic cooperation were discussed during the meeting with Azerbaijan’s deputy foreign minister, noted the Indian official.

She added that the cooperation in the IT sector, agriculture, cooperation within the UN and other issues were also discussed. Moreover, the two sides discussed possible mutual visits.

The Indian official also noted that a number of international events will be held in India by late 2016 and the country hopes that Azerbaijani ministers will take part in these events.

“This was a productive visit,” said Mehta adding that the session of the Azerbaijan-India Intergovernmental Commission is expected to be held in the coming months.
