First business incubators set to open at Azerbaijan universities

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec 13 /Trend N.Ismayilova/

Azerbaijan will study the international concept of setting up business incubators. Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Intigam Babayev told journalists at an international conference on Tuesday.

Such business incubators have supported mobile youth entrepreneurship across the globe and this experience could be worthwhile developing in Azerbaijan.

"Azerbaijan has the potential to create business incubators, and we have the intention to develop this area. The enterprise hubs will initially be based at the universities," Mr Babayev said.

The deputy minister found it difficult to be more specific as to when this development might take place as it's a new area for the country.

"After this meeting, we expect business incubators to be created not only in Baku, but also in the regional parts of the country. We also hope that in the framework of the conference, that young people will make suggestions on specific business models and new ideas," the official said.

The President of the Caspian Investment Centre Elshan Musayev noted that the country's business incubator creation will promotes further development of the economy and the introduction of new mobile technology.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Elmir Velizadeh noted that the ministry together with mobile operator Azerfon is already working on projects such as Future Lab.

She added that the significance of the ICT Industry Association established in 2011 in this area as being important.

Azerfon created an innovative centre called FutureLab with projects operating in five countries: Australia, USA, South Korea, Finland and Spain. They are also called SmartLab.

The main idea of the concept is to develop innovative solutions and services for private and commercial users, public and government agencies based on the latest mobile technology.
Azerfon, in turn has for the first time in the CIS, created a FutureLab centre. FutureLab will be pilot project backed by the Government of Azerbaijan to establish a regional innovation centre.
