Iran exported the first consignment of butane produced at the Siri natural gas liquids (NGL) production plant.

A consignment of 66,000 barrels of butane was loaded on Black Pearl 110 tanker and exported from the Siri Island, located in the Persian Gulf, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on August 23.

Normal butane are mainly used for gasoline blending, as a fuel gas, either alone or in a mixture with propane, and as a feedstock for the manufacture of ethylene and butadiene, a key ingredient of synthetic rubber. Isobutane is primarily used by refineries to enhance (increase) the octane number of motor gasoline.

The Siri NGL plant, which went on stream in February 2013, collects around 100 million cubic feet (mcf) of dry gas per day, thus preventing associated petroleum gas from being flared.

The NGL plant also produces 1,500 barrels per day (bpd) of pentane, 4,000 bpd of butane, 1,400 bpd of gas condensate, and 8,000 bpd of propane.
