Iran’s gas output from South Pars field doubled over the past four years, said Deputy Oil Minister Ali Kardor.

Speaking in a ceremony where Iran inaugurated new phases of the gas field, Kardor said Iran has so far extracted a little over 1 trillion cubic meters, worth $191 billion, Mehr news agency reported April 16.

South Pars is shared between Iran and Qatar, which calls it the North Dome. Qatar has so far extracted close to 1.8 trillion cubic meters of gas from the field.

Phases 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 of South Pars gas field were inaugurated earlier the day. South Pars, located in southern region, is divided into 24 development phases and contains 40 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.

It covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are in Qatar’s territorial waters and is called the North Dome.

Qatar in early April announced that it was lifting a 12-year moratorium on the North Dome, aiming to increase the gas and gas condensates output by 10 percent (400,000 barrels per day of oil equivalent).
