By Umid Niayesh - Trend:

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is in New York to participate in the annual UN General Assembly meeting, announced Tehran's plans to propose solutions and mechanisms for fighting terrorism.

"Last year, Iran raised the topic of a world free from violence and extremism and today we see how badly extremism is affecting the region and our prediction was correct," Rouhani said upon arrival at New York's John F. Kennedy airport on Sept. 23, Iran's Fars news agency reported.

"This year, we will discuss and study solutions to fight terrorism and violence," he added.

Rouhani left Tehran for New York on Sept. 22, for his second visit to New York since he took the office last year.

He is scheduled to meet David Cameron on Sept. 24 to hold the first bilateral talks between a British prime minister and an Iranian president since the 1979 revolution.

The meeting, a significant thaw in diplomatic relations between the countries, is designed to explore the support the Iranians can give to the fight against Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria, the Guardian newspaper reported.

Both Iranian and the US sides have announced that a possible meeting between Rouhani and his American counterpart Barack Obama is not scheduled, however Rouhani said that "anything is possible in the world of politics."

Speculation about the possible talks between the two sides in particular has been mounting because the counterparts spoke by phone last year in September on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly.

The phone conversation was the first direct communication in decades between the heads of state of the two countries. Iranian conservatives severely criticized Rouhani on the issue.

The 69th UN General Assembly opened on Sept. 16 and will last until Oct 1. Rouhani is expected to deliver his speech on September 25.
