Iran says détente with US unlikely even if nuclear agreement reached

Tehran, Iran, May 13

Senior Iranian politician Aliakbar Velayati said that even if Iran and the group 5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) reach a comprehensive agreement on Iran 's nuclear program, the normalization of relations with the US is not likely.

Despite a growing sense of hope in official Iranian circles that the final details of the nuclear agreement will be settled by the June deadline, the former Iranian foreign minister was cautious.

"We think this agreement is very delicate and very sensitive so both sides should be careful and not think we are at the end of the negotiations," said Velayati, who is senior consultant to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran 's ISNA news agency reported May 13.

"We're in the middle of the negotiations and their outcome depends on US policy. Sometimes the US promises something and the next day they say something else‫."

"Even if a nuclear deal is struck, normalization of relations with the US was not likely, an attitude in line with the regime's official position. The US will continue the same old policies," he said‫.
